Youth in Siaya county marked Valentine’s Day in style by thronging a public park in numbers to apply for the national identity card and also register as voters.
In an event organised by The Walter Okello Foundation at the Governor’s Park in Siaya town, was a beehive of activity, with several entertainment activities lined up to mark the global event.
Speaking to journalists, the event organiser, Walter Okello, said they decided to bring together young people from all over the county under the theme Love, Leadership and Unity.
“We are blending matters love together with civic engagement, registration of identity cards and voters,” he said.
Okello urged the youth to ensure that they acquire the vital documents to enable them take part in shaping the destiny of the country.
“We are telling our young people that the best way to influence society and destiny is by taking part in the civic process,” he said, adding, “You need an identity card, not just for registering as a voter, but also to transact national government business.”
Okello urged the youth to use their talents to generate income, adding that the white-collar jobs were no longer available.
Addressing the gathering, an official of the Walter Okello foundation said that apart from registration of voters, the participants were also mentored on how to monetise their talents and also start and run successful businesses.
“A lot of creative people were here and taught us how to monetise our talents and earn money from what we are good at,” he said.
A content creator, Immaculate Awuor Nyar Abito challenged fellow youths not to despair over scarce employment opportunities, urging them to make use of the relevant applications in their cell phones to generate income.
