Day secondary schools in Kiharu Constituency are set to receive a major boost after the local National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) embarks to establish and equip science and computer laboratories in day secondary schools.

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro said the initiative aims to strengthen teaching of science and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) subjects in day schools which often struggle with limited facilities compared to established boarding institutions.

Speaking on Friday during the launch of three newly constructed laboratories at Karemaini Secondary School, Nyoro said the move will help learners gain practical knowledge and compete fairly with students from well-equipped schools.

The commissioned laboratories include a science laboratory with a capacity of 70 learners, a fully equipped home science laboratory and a modern computer and digital laboratory fitted with internet connectivity and WiFi.

Nyoro noted that the project is part of a wider effort by the NG-CDF to ensure that day secondary schools in the constituency are well equipped to support quality learning.

โ€œBy investing in these laboratories, we want to deepen learning in science and ICT subjects. Our goal is to ensure that learners in day schools are not disadvantaged and can compete with those studying in well-established schools,โ€ he said.

The MP added that his long-term focus is to see more students from day secondary schools qualify to join universities noting that improved learning facilities play a key role in achieving that objective.

Nyoro explained that the Kiharu Masomo Bora programme which was launched some years ago is boosting standards of education in the constituency noting that subsidizing fees and provision of learning materials have seen an increase of students from day secondary schools join universities.

He added that they will roll out mentorship programmes to the schools which will aim to support students in their studies thus improving their performance.

Meanwhile, the legislator criticized leaders whom he accused of prioritizing personal interests instead of serving the public on critical national matters.

He said it was wrong for individuals to use serious national issues to advance personal ambitions or pursue financial gains urging leaders to focus on the interests of Kenyans.

โ€œLeadership should be about serving the people and safeguarding national interests rather than pursuing personal gain,โ€ He added.

Nyoro also called on the government to prioritize education funding as the country heads into the budget-making process.

According to the MP, Kenya requires about Sh30 billion to support nearly three million learners in senior secondary schools, particularly those studying in day institutions.

He expressed confidence that the country has the capacity to mobilize the funds through proper allocation of resources, including support from the NG-CDF as well as collaboration between the national and county governments to offer free education in primary and secondary schools.
