Residents benefit from free cancer screening

The Cure Cervical Cancer organization in partnership with the Coalition for Women Health in Africa (COWHA), has screened over 4,000 patients in Luanda South Ward, Vihiga County, in the past two months.

The team has been conducting home-based screening and so far 1,050 cases have tested positive for the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes cervical cancer, and been treated while 12 discovered to have lesions and referred.

Lauding the delegation for the commendable work when they paid him a courtesy call at his office today, Governor Dr Wilber Ottichilo pledged that the county health workers will accord them the necessary cooperation so that the campaign succeeds.

The county head stated that his administration is ready to partner with other stakeholders so as to be able to address health issues of the people.

Dr Ottichilo appealed to the residents to take advantage of the mobile clinic services so that they could undergo the screening, for HPV can be destroyed upon early detection.

He observed that cervical cancer has become common and urged parents to ensure the preteen girls are vaccinated against it.
