Mandera HoDs trained for Competency-Based Education rollout

Heads of Department (HoDs) from schools across Mandera County are undergoing a five-day training from April 7 to 11 aimed at preparing schools for the rollout of Competency-Based Education (CBE) at the senior school level.

The training, supported by the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA), focuses on strengthening leadership skills and equipping HoDs with the knowledge required to support teachers during the transition from content-based teaching to competency-based learning.

Participants were guided through key areas including understanding the new curriculum framework, interpreting curriculum designs, and aligning teaching plans with expected learning outcomes. They were also trained on modern assessment methods, emphasizing practical and continuous evaluation techniques.

The programme introduced HoDs to learner-centered teaching approaches such as inquiry-based learning, integration of information and communication technology (ICT), and the use of emerging tools like artificial intelligence in lesson planning.

Thuo Karanja from CEMASTEA highlighted that the training will enable HoDs to mentor teachers more effectively, improve classroom practices, and ensure a smooth implementation of the new curriculum.

Trained HoDs are expected to cascade the knowledge to teachers in their respective schools, support school leadership in preparing for the transition, and monitor progress in implementing CBE.

This initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen education reforms and promote skills-based learning across the country.
