Anthrax outbreak confirmed in Vihiga

The Department of Health Services in Vihiga County has confirmed an outbreak of cutaneous Anthrax in Emuhaya Sub-County.

According to the department, the outbreak follows the handling and consumption of meat from a cow that died suddenly on April 7,2026 at Ebusunzo Village, Emukolla Sub-location, West Bunyore Ward.

The County Director of Public Health Martin Otsosi said that two human cases have been reported, with one death confirmed as a result of the infection.

He further stated that the county government has since initiated enhanced surveillance measures, including active case finding and monitoring of affected areas, to contain the spread of the disease.

Health officials have urged residents to avoid handling or consuming meat from animals that die unexpectedly and to immediately report such incidents to veterinary and public health authorities for appropriate action.

The county health department has assured the public that response teams are on the ground and that further interventions are ongoing to prevent additional infections.
