Varsity stakes Sh6.4 million in prizes to boost alumni network

Mount Kenya University (MKU) has unveiled a Sh6.4 million prize initiative aimed at energising its alumni network and strengthening ties with current students.

The annual competition, launched at the Thika main campus, seeks to reward outstanding alumni achievements while fostering mentorship and career opportunities for graduates yet to secure jobs.

According to MKU Director of Alumni Relations Ms Virginiah Musawa, the programme targets the university’s growing community of more than 100,000 alumni worldwide.

She noted that the initiative is designed to build a vibrant, supportive network that not only celebrates alumni excellence but also inspires students through mentorship and professional guidance.

“This initiative is more than just about awards. It is about creating opportunities for our alumni, preparing students for the realities of the job market, and building a lifelong connection between the university and its graduates,” Ms Musawa said.

She explained that the awards would be guided by industry leaders and accomplished graduates, focusing on contemporary issues such as digital leadership and wellness in high-performance careers. These, she added, would serve as launchpads for growth, collaboration, and mentorship.

MKU has also invested in platforms to keep alumni connected, including a dynamic series of professional development webinars.

These sessions have been designed to empower participants with practical skills while strengthening bonds within the alumni community.

The competitions will feature categories such as professional excellence, public service and leadership, community service, global impact, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

By recognizing outstanding contributions, MKU hopes to inspire current students while encouraging alumni to take part in mentorship, internships, scholarships, and research support.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi said the programme would position the alumni as partners in the university’s growth.

“By volunteering your time, offering internships, and contributing to scholarships, you empower others to succeed and ensure that our institution continues to thrive as a place of innovation, learning, and opportunity,” he told the alumni.

The Director of MKU Eldoret Campus, Dr Emily Kirwok underscored the importance of alumni involvement in preparing students for careers.

She said such initiatives not only build professional networks but also empower graduates to contribute to society more effectively.

The university emphasised that the awards align with MKU’s long-term vision of nurturing leaders and changemakers.

Through this initiative, the institution seeks to create a cycle of success where alumni, students, and the university continue to inspire and support each other.
