The County Government of Vihiga has rolled out an ambitious greenhouse farming initiative aimed at boosting food security and enhancing agricultural productivity across the region.
Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo announced the program during his field visit to county projects in Mungoma Ward, where he inspected ongoing developments and met with farmers.
The initiative will see 100 farmers benefit from modern irrigation systems, construction of greenhouses, and distribution of farm inputs. To support the start of greenhouse production, the Governor also donated assorted indigenous vegetable seedlings, including Sisaka, Managu, Murenda, Mitoo, Kunde (Cow peas), and Kanzira.
“This initiative is not only about food security but also about creating wealth for our farmers. By embracing greenhouse technology, we are enabling controlled and continuous production of high-value crops while reducing post-harvest losses,” said Governor Ottichilo.
County Director for Climate Change Winston Atamba emphasized that the success of the program relies on equipping farmers with skills to manage the new technology.
“We are training farmers on greenhouse management, irrigation techniques, and climate-smart practices so that they can maximize yields and ensure sustainability. The idea is to build capacity and make greenhouse farming a long-term solution for food security in Vihiga,” Atamba noted.
The county is also providing extension services to guide farmers in greenhouse management and agribusiness. The initiative is aligned with the recently launched Agroecology Policy, which promotes sustainable and eco-friendly farming practices.
Farmers welcomed the project, saying the donation of indigenous vegetable seedlings will help them transition smoothly into greenhouse farming and increase their household incomes.
With the greenhouse initiative, Vihiga County is positioning itself as a leader in climate-smart agriculture in Western Kenya while creating employment opportunities, particularly for the youth and women.
