A driver of a delivery van was shot dead after a lone gunman waylaid and sprayed their vehicle with bullets along the Chemolingot-Marigat road in banditry prone Baringo County.
The driver died on the spot while two other passengers aboard the ill-fated van sustained gunshots wounds during the ambush in which the heavily armed bandit reportedly made away with cash and an assortment of valuables.
According to a witness Abel Moranga, the delivery van belonging to Gilanis supermarket in Nakuru city was heading to Marigat area while on officials trip with two drivers including the deceased when the gun man struck.
He said the duo had offered him a lift along with two other ladies passengers at Nginyang town due to lack of public means at the time before the lone pedestrian flagged them to stop before opening fire when the vehicle came to a halt.
Moranga who works as a missionary at Riong’o in Silale ward told Kenya News Agency while recuperating at Baringo County referral hospital in Kabarnet town after sustaining injuries said he was robbed more Ksh 60,000 at gunpoint.
“After shooting dead one of the drivers, he then proceeded to fire at his surviving colleague but luckily exhausted his rounds of ammunition and opted to fetch after holding us at gunpoint for more than an hour,” he said.
The missionary said a police officer who heard the gunshots rushed to the scene on time and engaged the bandit who later fled before he refilled his magazine with bullets.
Baringo County Police Commander Julius Kiragu while confirming the incident on phone said the deceased body has been moved to Baringo County referral hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
He noted that police have commenced investigations into the matter which he said may lead to the arrest and possible arraignment of the culprit and other accomplices in court.
Kiragu confirmed that one of the seriously injured victim of the attack was however relocated from the Baringo County referral hospital to Nakuru City for urgent specialized treatment after suffering a life threatening gunshot.
Preliminary reports into the incident indicated that the body of the deceased was riddled with more than 10 bullets shots as the gunman went about torturing his already surrendered captives..
