NACADA recovers drugs near school in Siaya

A sting operation by a multi-agency team led by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) today led to the recovery of an assortment of drugs and illicit liquor next to a primary school in Siaya town.

The operation, led by NACADA’s deputy director for corporate communication, Simon Mwangi saw one suspect arrested and a notorious drug and illicit alcohol ring that has been operating at Mahinga Village, Nyandiwa Sublocation dismantled.

Addressing the media at Siaya police station, Mwangi said the operation was conducted following a public outcry and expressed shock that the drug moguls had established a base just across the fence from Awelo primary school.

Mwangi said that the raid uncovered a stockpile of narcotics and contraband alcohol that was being trafficked in broad day light.

During the operation that was carried out by officers from NACADA, the National police service and the Kenya Revenue Authority, over 1,000 rolls of bhang, 15 brooms of the same and bhang seeds in three bags were recovered.

Also recovered were 353 packets of Super match cigarettes meant for export, 240 sticks of Oris cigarettes, 100 litres of illicit Chang’aa, 36 bottles of Ugin liquor and 179 bottles of Simba Waragi Gin.

The deputy director further said that the operation, which is part of a countrywide Rapid results Initiative (RRI) against drug and substance abuse as directed by the interior cabinet secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen further recovered Sh75,610 suspected illicit proceeds.

He called on the public to volunteer any information that they may have through toll free number, 1192 to help the country get rid of drugs and illicit substances.
