Equity Bank has officially opened its Likoni branch at Shelly Beach Mall, bringing the bank’s total footprint in Mombasa to 10 branches and 221 branches countrywide.
Speaking to the press, the Regional General Manager Joseph Ndung’u said the new branch will provide a full range of services, including account opening, loan applications, and digital banking solutions.
Customers will be able to access unsecured loans of up to Sh3 million through their mobile phones, use Equitel lines for transactions, and benefit from training on digital and financial literacy.
On his part, the Likoni branch manager Moses Mureithi said that the branch will make services more accessible to the people of Likoni who will no longer have to travel across the ferry or to Ukunda for banking.
“We are introducing financial products such as Biashara Loan savings for small businesses, Pamoja loans for groups and chamas, and Fanikisha loans tailored for women,” said Murithi
The area MP Mishi Mboko welcomed the development, describing it as a major step toward improving financial access for residents.
“I want to thank the Equity family for opening a branch in Likoni. Under devolution, services must reach the people directly. Many residents had to cross with the ferry to Moi Avenue or Digo Road branches, or travel to Ukunda, which was inconvenient,” said Mboko.
“Equity has shown commitment to serving both the wealthy and the poor, while also supporting education, health, and environmental conservation initiatives,” she added
Through the Equity Group Foundation, the bank has supported over 69,000 students through the Wings to Fly and Elimu Scholarship programmes, promoted environmental conservation by planting 36.4 million trees, and partnered with communities to improve healthcare under the Equity Afya programme.
Equity Group Foundation Director of Advocacy Bonface Kinoti Gatobu said the foundation will continue to collaborate with local leaders and community groups in Likoni.
“We plan to partner with the MP’s office to support the boda riders’ association by providing laptops and printers,” said Gatobu.
“We will also plant fruit trees in public schools to improve nutrition and protect the environment,” he added.
