Embu Leaders and residents have joined other Kenyans in mourning former Prime Minister and ODM Leader, Raila Odinga.
Many termed him as a towering figure of democracy in the country and also a selfless leader, who could go to any length, to ensure the country remained united.
Led by Governor Cecily Mbarire, the leaders said Raila was one of the most iconic figures in the country’s political history.
“Raila was not just a politician; he was a patriot, reformer and a true statesman whose life was devoted to serving Kenya,” the Governor stated in her tribute posted on her social media platforms.
She noted that his unwavering belief in a better Kenya inspired generations and shaped the democratic path, that the country continues to walk this day.
Governor Mbarire said Raila was a key architect of the 2010 Constitution that gave birth to devolution, saying he had etched his name in the country’s history, as a hero of second liberation and a symbol of courage in the face of adversity.
“As a nation, we have lost a towering leader and a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, equity and inclusivity,” she said.
Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI), Embu Branch Chair, Mugo Mate, said Raila has left a big political vacuum that cannot be easily filled.
“It will take ages to have someone who will fit in the shoes of Raila who mentored and molded many leaders teaching them the true meaning of leadership and service,” he said.
He said Raila was able to embrace a conciliatory tone and sacrifice personal ambition when circumstances demanded, so exemplified by the handshakes he has had in the past regimes and the current one.
Meanwhile, University of Embu students from Nyanza, took to the streets to mourn Raila. In their mourning, the learners kept chanting ‘jowi’ (meaning buffalo-an animal that symbolizes strength and courage), equating the departed leader with it.
