Security personnel in Elgeyo Marakwet county have arrested a 33-year-old man who was found transporting seven bags of bhang with a street value of Sh13 million.
Elgeyo Marakwet County Commissioner David Koske said security personnel from Keiyo South received a tip-off from members of the public that they suspected a vehicle Reg. No. KDV 627S was carrying illegal substances.
Koske said the police mounted a roadblock next to Metkei Girls, stopped the vehicle and upon search, uncovered seven bags of bhang.
Upon interrogation, Koske said the driver, 33-year-old Vincent Odhiambo said he was transporting the bhang from Busia to Nairobi.
The CC said they contacted the anti-narcotics unit from Eldoret who ascertained that the bhang weighed 266 kgs with a street value of Sh13 million.
He said the Eldoret-Metkei-Ravine Road had become quite popular with traffickers, warning police have mounted a major security crackdown along it to curb the menace. He warned the traffickers that the law will soon catch up with them.
Koske said the interior ministry had embarked on a Rapid Result Initiative (RRI) which is running from January 9th-April 20th aimed at mopping up illegal brews and drugs.
He thanked members of the public for providing information and urged them to continue assisting the government in fighting the sale and use of narcotic drugs, saying it has caused great harm to both the young and the old.
