As the body of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga arrived in the Country this morning, residents of Homa Bay town continued paying tribute with peacefully processions along the streets.
The youth, women and the elderly all trekked along the streets of the town eulogizing Raila as a statesman and a fearless defender of human rights.
Some carried twigs, shields, spear and clubs which are used during mourning in Luo culture. Some also emerged with cattle in the streets, to signify Raila as a respected elder.
A mourner Patrick Agwagra, said they have lost a legendary leader who was a pan- Africanist.
“Raila was truly respected as a leader. We have lost a person who unified people,” Agwagra said.
He said he first met Raila in 1988 after he was released from prison.
“I knew Raila as someone who didn’t hold grudges. It is painful that we have lost such a kind soul,” he said.
Homa Bay Members of County Assembly (MCAs), also paid tributes to Raila.
The County Assembly Speaker, Polycarp Okombo, said the Assembly adjourned sittings until further notice.
He said Raila had a rich history and has left a huge void in the country’s political space.
The Speaker was flanked by MCAs Boaz Kiri (Kabuoch North), Samuel Lieta (Karachuonyo-West) and Patrick Ware (Gem West).
” We know him as the father of democracy and devolution. He fought for the rights of the poor and we pray for peace,” Okombo said.
The Speaker called for unity among Homa Bay residents whom he described as diehard supporters of Raila.
” Raila’s death has come at a time when majority of his supporters in Homa Bay were waiting to join him in ODM at 20 years celebrations.
Kiri hailed Raila for accepting to join the Broad-Based Government. “We have lost a great Pan-Africanist. I don’t think we will get someone who would match Raila in politics,” he said.
