As the country continues to mourn the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, leaders from Baringo County have lauded him for his instrumental role in fostering unity and national reconciliation, particularly his efforts to bring KANU Chairman Gideon Moi into the broad-based government.
Led by Eldama Ravine Member of Parliament (MP) Musa Sirma, the leaders spoke during Mashujaa Day celebrations held at Kerkwony Stadium in Eldama Ravine, where they paid glowing tribute to the ODM leader for his lifelong commitment to national unity and inclusivity.
Sirma revealed that before his sudden demise in India last Wednesday, Raila was key in reconciling Gideon Moi and President William Ruto, a move that helped strengthen political cooperation in the Rift Valley region.
“Raila played a crucial role in uniting Gideon Moi with President Ruto, and we shall remember him for that selfless act of leadership,” said Sirma. “He brokered a deal between the two leaders, facilitating meetings in Dubai and later at State House, which eventually culminated in the landmark announcement at Kabarak.”
The MP noted that this reconciliation led to Gideon Moi’s decision to withdraw from the senatorial race, with hopes of contributing to the country through the broad-based government.
Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi also paid tribute to Raila, commending him for recognizing and nominating Harold Kipchumba to replace Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi in the National Assembly.
Cheboi further praised Raila for his firm support of devolution, recalling how, just two weeks before his death, he urged the National Assembly and National Treasury to ensure timely and full disbursement of county funds. “We cherish his leadership and are deeply grateful for his unwavering commitment to devolution,” the governor stated.
Nominated MP Harold Kipchumba led a moment of silence in honour of the fallen statesman, revealing that Raila had called him just two days before his passing to encourage him to represent the people of Baringo well in ODM and in the broad-based government.
Kipchumba also used the event to commend parents and guardians of children living with disabilities and cautioned against attempts to have UDA candidate Vincent Chemitei run unopposed in the upcoming November 27 by-elections.
“Raila was a strong believer in democracy and fair competition. The people of Baringo deserve the right to elect a leader of their choice,” he affirmed.
