Migori County Commissioner (CC) Kisilu Mutua has urged area residents to continue upholding peace, love and unity in order to create a conducive environment for development.
Addressing residents at Isebania KRA Grounds in Kuria West Sub County during Mashujaa Day celebrations, Mutua at the same time expressed concern over continued feuds between two Kuria clans involved in cattle rustling in the region.
“I want to ask the two Kuria communities of Buirge and Nyabasi, who are still involved in cattle thefts; in this century: Do we still need to be discussing on how to stop cattle stealing?,” he posed.
The CC advised the communities to shun retrogressive traditions such as cattle rustling and female genital mutilation and focus on development matters.
“If you sit down with citizens of developed counties, what do you think they will discuss? Yet here we are discussing cattle theft, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Gender Based Violence (GBV),” decried Mutua.
The CC further warned those involved in cattle rustling that they would be dealt with ruthlessly saying the culprits were being monitored, even via social media.
He also warned those possessing illegal firearms to surrender them to the government, failure to which they would be forcefully disarmed.
“I am aware that some of the residents here in Kuria have illegal firearms used in aiding cattle rustling and other petty robberies,” said Mutua.
Concerning the long school holiday, Mutua advised parents and guardians to take care of their children to prevent them from engaging in social vices such as drug abuse, immorality and crime. He wondered why some parents were complaining about the longevity of the holiday.
On FGM, the CC said that the government was aware of the forthcoming circumcision season especially for the Wairege Kuria sub clan warning would-be perpetrators that they would be dealt with according to the law.
He warned that those all found abetting FGM in the region would be arrested and charged, irrespective of their social status in the society.
Mutua hailed the cordial working relations between the county and national government saying it had led to speedy development.
