Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner (CC) David Gitonga has called on local leaders and residents to work together for peaceful coexistence and enhanced service delivery to the people.
Speaking during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations held in Mukothima, Tharaka North sub county, Gitonga said the government is committed to ensuring wananchi receive quality services, but that goal can only be achieved if all stakeholders work hand in hand.
“We must all join hands and make Tharaka Nithi great. Our mission is to ensure wananchi get the services they deserve,” he said.
The CC also expressed concern over the destruction of pancake tortoise at the Meru national park, a rare species found only in a few other counties in Kenya.
“These animals are a God-given resource that can attract tourists and bring revenue to our county. We are asking leaders to draft laws and conduct public participation to sensitize residents on the importance of protecting these creatures,” he said.
Gitonga noted that safeguarding pancake tortoise will promote tourism, preserve culture, and position Tharaka Nithi as an environmental conservation hub.
The CC also touched on environmental conservation saying residents often destroy their habitats by burning farms during land preparation.
On the upcoming December holiday, Gitonga appealed to parents to watch over their children during the long school holiday, warning against retrogressive practices such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
“Schools are closing, and children will be home for a long period. Parents must take care of them and ensure no child is subjected to FGM. This harmful culture must stop,” he stressed.
