The family of a police officer who was killed by bandits in Laikipia mid-last year is demanding the arrest and prosecution of two chiefs in Etago Sub County, Kisii County over alleged assault and damage to property during his burial.
Addressing the press at their home in Ruora village of Moticho ward, Etago Sub County, James Mogoi, the father of the late Douglas Mogoi, said the family had been seeking justice through the authorities in vain.
The late officer died while undergoing treatment at the Nanyuki Referral Hospital after he was shot by bandits at a camp in Laikipia North Sub County.
The distraught father claimed the local chiefs, Charles Omwono and Shem Ayienda from Getenga and Otendo locations respectively, had assaulted his four family members and damaged property during their kin’s funeral.
Mogoi noted the confrontation began when he differed with the administrators over the burial grounds for his late son, prompting attacks from the chiefs and members of the public.
A medical examination report from Etago Sub County Hospital indicates that Mogoi was assaulted by a kick which caused injuries to his left lower limb.
A valuer, Duncan Njiri, also conducted a valuation which revealed that property worth Sh326,400 was destroyed by members of the public after allegedly being incited by the chiefs.
Mogoi added that despite reporting the incident to the relevant authorities, nothing seemed to be forthcoming one year later.
Abigael Mogoi, the sister of the deceased, noted that despite the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) recommending that the chiefs be arrested and charged in court, no arrests were made.
She petitioned the government to assist the family get justice by ensuring the chiefs are brought to book.
Notably, a source at ODPP who sought anonymity, said the file was under review and a determination on the matter will be made within two weeks.
