Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo is battling his removal from office by impeachment for the third time following the approval of an order paper for a special sitting on Monday 17 ,2025.
The order paper from the fourth session in the third assembly of the County assembly of Nyamira gives notice of motion for removal of Governor Amos Nyaribo from office by way of impeachment on the ground of gross violation of the constitution of Kenya and other laws and abuse of office.
The mover of the notice of motion is a Member of the county assembly for Bonyamatuta ward Julius Matwere.
Circulation of this order paper has raised concerns from both the leadership of Nyamira County and beyond and stirred tension between supporters and opposers of this politically emotive motion.
Nyaribo survived a second impeachment by a whisker in September last year after Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) failed to attain the voting threshold of two thirds to impeach him.
22 MCAs voted for governor Nyaribo’s impeachment while 12 voted no to the motion.
The house needed 23 votes for the impeachment motion to sail through. Nyaribo missed the ouster from office by just one vote out of the 34 votes cast.
The mover of last year’s impeachment motion, Evans Matunda nominated MCA from the wiper party, claimed the governor had grossly violated the constitution and other laws, denying students their rights to education, violation of the Nyamira County Persons with Disability act, 2023 by failing to constitute the Nyamira County Persons with Disability Board, failing to contain the county wage bill within the legal threshold under the public finance management Act amongst other accusations.
In October 2023 Nyaribo survived his first impeachment where he faced 12 charges or accusations fronted by Esise ward MCA Josiah Mang’era some of which included; flagging off empty containers disguised as medical supplies, illegal recruitment of staff and disobeying court orders.
The proponents of the impeachment motion lost numerical advantage on the house floor where 18 MCAs voted in favour of Governor’s impeachment out of the 28 that had previously appended their signatures to the motion.
County residents have decried that perennial impeachment motion of the Governor by their Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) has created a huge political divide and anxiety amongst them, tangled their leadership focus and stalled development projections and objectives and the country is almost undertaking another general election unfortunately Nyamira County has nothing to be proud of as a county.
