An election observer representing a non-governmental organisation Griffin Nanzige has decried low voter turnout at Malava polling station as voters cast their ballots to elect the member of parliament for Malava constituency.
At the same time, Nanzige urged the youth from the constituency to turn out and vote for their preferred candidate, warning that lamenting on social media about bad governance while failing to vote will not solve their challenges.
He said that the majority of those casting their votes are elderly, noting that only a few youths have been seen visiting the polling station to vote.
He, however, noted that security has been beefed up in polling stations, and urged those who have voted to return to their duties and wait for the final tally from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Nanzige urged the government and the IEBC to conduct thorough civic education among the youth on the importance of registering as voters and why they need to vote when elections are held.
The parliamentary seat which fell vacant following the death of Malulu Injendi has attracted nine candidates; James Shinachi Angatia of Alliance for Real Change Party (ARK), Shivakale Bruce Jason of Entrust Pioneer Party (EPP), Joab Burudi Manyasi of Democratic National Alliance Party (DNA) and Edgar Busiega Mwanga of Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
Other aspirants for the seat are, Benjamin Nalwa of National Ordinary People Empowerment Union (NOPEU), David Ndakwa of United Democratic Alliance (UDA), George Ngaira Oyugi of Party of Democratic Union (PDU), Seth Panyako of Democratic Action Party Kenya (DAP-K) and Wilberforce Indai Tuvei of Kenya Moja Movement party (KMM).
The constituency has over 94,000 registered voters who are voting in 198 polling stations.
