Siaya widows are set to benefit from a Sh5.9 million empowerment kitty to boost their economic activities.
According to the Siaya widows’ empowerment programme coordinator, Tabitha Ogutu, the money will be disbursed through 96 groups across the county.
Speaking at West Sakwa ward in Bondo where she presided over the distribution of funds to widows from the area, Ogutu said all the 30 wards in the county will be covered by the programme whose patron is the Siaya senator, Dr. Oburu Oginga.
She said that each of the group will get Sh20,000 to boost their table banking activities, adding that so far, a total of Sh1.8 million have been disbursed.
Ogutu said that the programme will also roll out a free legal aid services to help widows navigate through succession and land disputes.
“We are partnering with organisations such as Access to Justice Kenya and the Office of the Presidential Advisor, Jaoko Oburu to register their legal challenges” she said.
West Sakwa Ward Member of the County Assembly, Mrs. Tabu Osewe Odinga, hailed the programme for coming to the aid of the widows, saying that there was need for civic education programmes targeting widows so that they understand their rights.
