Operations at the Lands Offices in Embu have ground to a halt after Kenya Power disconnected electricity over a Sh.40, 000 bill.
The disconnection has forced staff to work in poorly lit rooms, slowing down services majority of which require electricity connectivity thus frustrating citizens who depend on the office for essential land transactions.
The outcry from disgruntled clients led Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi to make an impromptu visit at the offices on Monday afternoon to assess the situation.
Senator Mundigi expressed disappointment with the state of affairs, terming the situation “unfortunate and unacceptable.”
“This is a critical government office that should be offering uninterrupted services to our people,” he complained.
He observed that land issues are sensitive and time-bound, and delays caused by power outages could spark disputes, stall investments, and affect the county’s economic growth.
Consequently, Mundigi called on Cabinet Secretary (CS) Alice Wahome to urgently intervene, warning that prolonged disruption of services at the office could paralyse land transactions and inconvenience many residents.
Despite the challenges, Mundigi commended the dedication of the staff he found working under difficult conditions, saying their resilience showed their commitment to serving the public.
“The staff here are doing their best despite the darkness, but clearly, they cannot continue working effectively without electricity. This issue must be resolved urgently,” he said.
The Senator assured the public that he would escalate the matter to the relevant offices, adding that government facilities offering essential services should never be crippled over unsettled bills.
