Two people including a foreign tourist died, while another one sustained injuries during a grisly road accident along Nairobi- Mombasa Highway in Mukaa Sub County, Makueni county.
Mukaa Sub County Police Commander Abduba Hussein said the Monday 10.40 am accident occurred at Nyumba Ndune area after the vehicle the foreigners were travelling in was involved in a collision with a truck.
He said the driver of a local tour van and a citizen of Portugal died on the spot, while a Belgian was rushed to hospital with serious injuries
Hussein said preliminary reports indicated that the truck driver travelling in opposite direction reportedly failed to maintain his lane before hitting the oncoming tour van sideways causing the crash.
“Daniel Shironga (50) driving a motor vehicle registration KDW 339H, make Sino Truck tipper from Mombasa direction failed to keep on his lane and collided sideways with an oncoming vehicle registration number KBQ 324M, Toyota Hiace Tour Van driven by Moses Kibanya Gathu (43) carrying foreign nationals,” he said.
He confirmed that Gathu and 30 year old Bruna Filipa from Portugal died, while 33 year old Boris Andre Beelen from Belgium was rushed to Sultan Hamud Sub County Hospital, where bodies of the deceased were also taken for preservation.
The police commander disclosed that the accident occurred at a steep stretch during the ongoing rains, observing that a similar scenario had just recurred last Saturday claiming three lives, while leaving 15 others injured after a trailer tried to overtake a fleet of vehicles recklessly at Mlima Kiu area in the same sub county.
He said wreckage of the vehicle was towed to Salama police station for further inspection.
