Uasin Gishu strengthens addiction recovery through family therapy

In a move to strengthen the recovery of persons battling alcohol and substance use disorders, the Uasin Gishu County Government has intensified family therapy sessions at the Uasin Gishu County Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre in Moiben, Moiben Sub-county, citing family involvement as key to successful rehabilitation.

Speaking during the second family therapy session for clients in Cohort Eight, Alcoholic Drinks Control Board (ADCB) Director Koiya Arap Maiyo, in a speech read by Chief Programmes Officer Beatrice Tanui, said family support plays a critical role in helping recovering clients rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society.

Tanui said the therapy sessions are designed to help clients mend relationships with their families through forgiveness, reconciliation and making amends, while also encouraging spiritual growth as part of the recovery process.

She noted that the participation of parents and guardians demonstrates the important role families play in supporting the rehabilitation journey of their loved ones.

“The process seeks to restore relationships between clients and their families while promoting personal transformation that supports long-term recovery,” she said.

Tanui added that the county government has continued to invest in rehabilitation services aimed at addressing the growing challenge of alcohol and substance abuse, noting that the Moiben facility provides treatment and psychosocial support to affected individuals.

Parents who attended the session welcomed the programme, saying it had helped their children make positive behavioural changes and offered them an opportunity to rebuild their lives.

One parent said the rehabilitation programme had restored hope to many families affected by addiction and appealed for its continued support to enable more people to access treatment.

The Uasin Gishu County Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre offers a range of services, including medical treatment, psychosocial counselling, spiritual support and family therapy, as part of efforts to enhance recovery and facilitate the successful reintegration of clients into their families and communities.
