A call for classification of zones as hardship areas

Tourism and Wildlife CS Rebecca Miano has called for classification of arid parts of Ndaragwa constituency in Nyandarua County as hardship areas during current revision of zones in that status.

Miano pointed out that when she was CS for Arid and Semi-Arid, she used to support for some parts of Ndaragwa to be classified as arid and semi-arid and hardship.

For a long time, there has been push for Ndaragwa areas that are arid and semi-arid to be classified as hardship zone to stop teachers and other civil servants from migrating to neighouring Laikipia County to benefit from hardship allowances.

The call is due to large part of Nyandarua North sub county has climatically conditions similar to neighboring areas in Laikipia County where government employees enjoy hardship allowances.

On enhancing security in the area, CS Miano observed that the Inspector General of police Douglas Kanja had promised to post officers to a police post that is nearing completion in Kihara location.

“Although Kiahara location is generally secure, the police post was necessitated by the fact that the residents travel far for police services,” said Miano.

The CS was speaking when she hosted neighbours in her parents’ rural home in Kihara village in Ndaragwa constituency to mark Mother’s Day.

During the occasion Miano used the day to empower several youth and women groups while the residents highlighted areas they would like addressed, mainly in education, water and roads sectors.

She revealed that soon the network of tarmacked roads in the Constituency will be increased as contractors are expected to start work on identified roads.

The CS was accompanied by KWS officers led by KWS assistant director in charge of Mountain Conservation Area Lucy Muita and Nyandarua KWS Warden Paul Wambugu while MCAs Mwangi Kagwe (Central ward) Cate Nyawira and Naomi Muthoni (both nominated) graced the occasion.

Nyawira said village elders, despite not being salaried, they used own resources to coordinate security matters in their jurisdiction hence called for their facilitation while Kagwe urged the CS to push for upgrading of Kiamaiko-Kihara-81-Subuko road to bitumen to open more rural areas of Ndaragwa adding that through assistance of the CS, a maternity wing has been built at the Ndaragwa health centre at a cost of Sh150 million.
