Residents of Banisa constituency are preparing for the upcoming by-election, scheduled for Thursday, November 27, 2025.
This after the seat fell vacant after former MP Kullow Maalim Hassan died while undergoing treatment at the Aga Khan University Hospital after a hit and run motorcycle accident in Nairobi’s South B estate on March 25, 2023.
He died after three days at the hospital on March 28, 2023 making the Kenya Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to declare the seat vacant and consequently announce the by-election.
However, the situation on the ground is different as compared to other regions in the country where IEBC has announced to conduct elections on the same day as locals say there is little need for a competitive election as they have unanimously agreed to back Ahmed Maalim Hassan as the sole candidate to succeed the late MP Kullow Maalim Hassan.
The residents say they are optimistic with Ahmed as the only replacement that can continue with the development agenda of the late MP.
Banisa constituency has been without a Member of Parliament for nearly two years following the death of Kullow in March 2023.
Residents say the absence of representation has hindered development in the Sub county and are eager to see leadership restored.
The electorate believe Ahmed is best placed to champion the completion of stalled projects and initiate new ones. The upcoming by-election is expected to be a largely symbolic exercise if no other candidates present themselves, with residents emphasizing that they want continuity and unity as the sub county moves forward.
