The Busia County government, with support from the Kenya Livestock Commercialisation Project, has invested Sh1.5 million in Bunyala North Ward, Bunyala Sub-County, to boost poultry farming and promote economic empowerment among residents.
The initiative includes the provision of 2,400 chicks, 80 bags of starter feeds, vaccines, and 12 heatless brooders, designed to reduce brooding costs. The project aims to improve food and nutrition security, create jobs, and stimulate local economic activity.
Chief Officer for Livestock Production and Veterinary Services, Mercy Imo, noted that the Mudembi Poultry Park, where the project is being implemented, had remained dormant for some time. She highlighted that with the new stock; the facility is expected to become fully operational within five months.
Addressing community members during the distribution, Imo urged residents to utilise the facility responsibly, including bringing eggs to be hatched at Sh30 per egg, to ensure sustainability and maximise benefits.
Busia County KeLCoP Project Coordinator, Radoli Shiundu, accompanied the chief officer and encouraged farmers to care for the project, warning against internal disputes that could undermine its success. He stressed the importance of close collaboration with livestock production officers to manage the park effectively.
Other poultry-keeping groups from Amukura East in Teso South and Elugulu Ward in Butula Sub-Counties received 700 chicks and 15 bags of chick mash as a reward for exemplary performance in a tree-planting campaign dubbed Trees for Chicks, which earned the county recognition for environmental innovation.
