Commissioner orders chiefs to ensure 100pc school enrollment

Makueni County Commissioner (CC) Duncan Darusi has directed chiefs and their Assistants to ensure all children who have attained school-going age are enrolled in local institutions.

Consequently, Darusi also said that girls who left school due to early pregnancies should also return and continue with their education.

The Administrator gave the directive during the inauguration of Felistus Mutunga as Chief for Kilyungi Location in Mbooni West Subcounty at the African Brotherhood Church (ABC) grounds on Friday.

“Children who have gotten pregnant should return to school. We need to protect our future generation. Our foundation is in our children,” said Darusi.

While congratulating the chief, the CC reminded chiefs and their assistants present that they are a bridge between the government and the community, hence the need to be dedicated and to serve with humility.

Further, Darusi urged the local residents to participate in matters of development and also support the chiefs in executing their duties in an effort to boost development in their areas of jurisdiction.

“If you want to go far, you have to walk with others. The aim of the government is to ensure the policies from the government benefit people,” observed the administrator.

The county commissioner also lauded the government for the tarmacking of the Kikima-Kyambasi road at a cost of over Sh1.2 billion that has improved transport in the area, besides the construction of a modern market at Kikima under the economic Stimulus programme.

On suicide, Darusi called for concerted efforts from the clergy, elected leaders, civil society and other stakeholders to combat the rising cases in the county.

Darusi also pointed out that efforts should be made to end Gender-Based Violence (GBV), which he said is a menace destroying families in the area.

On gambling, he warned the culprits involved in the illegal venture, saying they risked prosecution.

Speaking at the same event, Mbooni West Sub-county Police Commander Mr. Benson Makumbi warned that individuals involved in stealing avocados, macadamias and chickens will be arrested.

Makumbi appealed to the residents to provide information to the security agencies in confidence so that the culprits can be arrested and prosecuted according to the law.

“We will deal with the people stealing avocado, macadamia and chicken. You need to cooperate and give information to the security agencies in confidence to enable us to arrest the culprits,” said Makumbi.

He was reacting to sentiments of several wananchi who raised their concern over the increase of theft from farms and homesteads in the area.
