Crackdown ongoing targeting traders who violate potatoes packaging rule

A Crackdown targeting potato traders as well as transporters violating the 50 kilograms rule in the packaging of Irish potatoes is ongoing.

Elgeyo Marakwet County in conjunction with the state department for Crop Development Agriculture and food Authority, Agricultural Council of Kenya and National Potato Council of Kenya are implementing the regulations that banned packaging of potatoes in extended bags and only approved packaging to be done in 50 kg bags.

Speaking to KNA, the County Executive Committee member for agriculture and irrigation (CEC), Anne Chesoi said they are ensuring that the packaging is in the required 50 kg bag and enforcement shall be implemented from the farm to the markets.

“We have sensitized all the stakeholders on the regulations and expect the key players to comply with the regulations and guidelines set in place,” said Chesoi.

She added that the county has recruited inspectors who have been adequately briefed ahead of the Crackdown.

Chesoi added that the inspectors will be law enforcement agencies from the national government and the county government.
