Energy and Petroleum CS, Opiyo Wandayi, has commissioned the Last Mile Connectivity Project in Kamachei and Chesikaki Wards, Mt. Elgon Constituency, Bungoma County, marking a significant step toward expanding electricity access in the region.
Wandayi was accompanied by the area Member of Parliament, Fred Kapondi, the County Deputy Governor, Janepher Mbatiany, who represented Governor Kenneth Lusaka, and Chesikaki Member of County Assembly Jacob Psero.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the CS reaffirmed the national government’s commitment to achieving universal access to electricity.
“The Last Mile Connectivity programme remains a cornerstone in driving grassroots socio-economic development,” he said.
The CS also noted that expanded electricity access will stimulate small and medium enterprises, improve learning conditions in schools, enhance security and uplift living standards in rural communities.
Echoing the same sentiments, Kapondi described the project as transformative for Mt. Elgon Constituency.
“Reliable electricity will unlock economic potential, especially for youth and women engaged in small-scale businesses,” he noted.
The MP also thanked the national government for prioritizing the constituency in the electrification rollout.
On his part, the deputy governor reiterated the county government’s support for national development programmes. “Improved power connectivity will promote value addition in agriculture and attract local investment,” said Mbatiany.
Chesikaki MCA Jacob Psero urged residents to safeguard Kenya Power Company infrastructure to ensure sustainability and continued service delivery.
James Kiprop, a small-scale businessman in the area, lauded the project and thanked the MP for his efforts in lobbying for improved electricity connectivity.
“Reliable power would enable traders to expand their operations and reduce reliance on costly alternative energy sources.” Kiprop said.
The Last Mile Connectivity Project is part of the government’s broader strategy, aimed at achieving universal household electricity access and fostering inclusive economic growth across the country.
