Farmers in Vihiga County have been urged to prepare their farms and begin planting, following early rains that mark the onset of the March–April–May (MAM) long rain season.
Frederick Etemesi, County Director of Meteorology, said Vihiga has met the required rainfall onset criteria.
The Kenya Meteorological Department, under the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry on the recent rainfall onset update, noted that the county, which lies in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and Lake Victoria Basin, is expected to receive near to above-average rainfall during the season.
“The early rains create favorable conditions for agricultural activities. Farmers should take advantage of the moisture to prepare land and plant crops in good time,” Etemesi said.
Residents have also been advised to stay updated with weather forecasts and advisories from relevant authorities to support preparedness and reduce risks associated with heavy rainfall, particularly in flood-prone areas.
The department has also issued a heavy rainfall advisory for Vihiga and other counties in the Lake Victoria Basin, warning that rainfall exceeding 20mm in 24 hours, already being experienced in some areas, is likely to continue until March 3, 2026.
Residents have been cautioned to remain vigilant, especially in flood-prone areas and avoid driving or walking through moving water, sheltering under trees, or staying near grilled windows.
Authorities said floodwaters may appear downstream even in areas that have not recorded heavy rain.
Continuous updates will be provided by the Kenya Meteorological Department and County Meteorological departments to guide preparedness and reduce risks associated with intense rainfall.
The early rains offer opportunities for crop growth and water resource replenishment, but caution remains essential to minimize hazards.
