Former legislator joins residents in tree planting exercise

Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu on Monday joined Nyeri residents in a tree-planting exercise.

Speaking at Kiganjo, Nyeri County, while planting trees, the MP backed the initiative of tree planting, saying it will help in the conservation of the environment and boost food production.

Ngunjri urged all the 20 million registered voters to plant two trees since the National Government has declared National Tree Planting Day, saying there is a need for all the voters to ensure they continue planting trees even after Monday’s exercise.

He said Monday was National Tree Planting Day in line with President William Ruto’s directive on planting a target of 15 billion trees by 2032 and working towards a greener and more sustainable environment.

Ngunjiri said Nyeri leads in tree cover nationally at 45.17%.

‘’Let us endeavour in the conservation of the environment for generations to come to make Nyeri County green and improve the forest cover,’’ said Ngunjiri.

He added that tree planting plays a vital role in environmental conservation.

‘It does not only help combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere but also acts as a natural defence against soil erosion,’’ said Ngunjiri.

He said that additionally, trees provide shade, improve air quality, and offer habitat for numerous species of fauna.
