Government launches major electricity connection drive in Karachuonyo constituency

The national government has rolled out major electricity connectivity projects in Karachuonyo constituency with millions of shillings allocated to extend power to thousands of households in a Rural Electrification Programme.

Speaking during the launch of the projects at Sanda Primary School in Karachuonyo, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi said it was the first time the constituency has received substantial funding aimed at expanding electricity access to homes that have remained off the grid for years.

According to the CS, Karachuonyo has been allocated Sh300 million to connect approximately 4,500 households, while Homa Bay County as a whole received Sh2.1 billion to facilitate electricity connections to about 25,000 households.

“Although this may still not be enough, it is a very big step forward considering that this region has remained in darkness for many years,” Wandayi said, adding that the electrification programme is being rolled out nationwide.

He noted that the project is being implemented under the directive of President William Ruto, with clear instructions that no region, county, or community should be left behind in the government’s development agenda.

Wandayi reiterated the electrification drive is part of a broader national programme aimed at improving livelihoods, spurring economic growth, and ensuring equitable development across the country.

On politics, the CS observed that leaders in the region were working closely with ODM leadership, including Dr Oburu Odinga, within the framework of the broad-based government formed through cooperation between ODM and UDA.

He said residents had expressed support for the ongoing engagements and called for expedited talks toward a pre-election coalition agreement ahead of the next General Election.

“The people here have seen tangible development and are encouraged by the unity and cooperation within the broad-based government,” Wandayi said.

Karachuonyo Member of Parliament Andrew Odipo Koome welcomed the electricity projects, thanking President William Ruto and the national government for prioritising the constituency.

“This is a historic day for Karachuonyo. What we are witnessing is a clear product of the broad-based government,” Koome said.

He reaffirmed the constituency’s support for President Ruto and expressed optimism that continued collaboration beyond 2027 would ensure completion of the electrification projects and other development initiatives.

“We are grateful for this light that is coming to Karachuonyo, and we look forward to working closely with the President and his team for the benefit of our people,” the MP said.
