Government rules out border closure amid Ebola concerns

The government has ruled out plans to close Kenya’s borders amid concerns over rising Ebola cases, urging county governments to strengthen preparedness and residents to seek immediate medical attention if they develop symptoms.

The Head of the National AIDS and STI Control Programme (NASCOP) at the Ministry of Health, Dr Andrew Mulwa, said there was no intention to shut the country’s borders but emphasised the need for vigilance and preparedness to prevent the spread of the disease.

Speaking at AIC Kiatineni Church in Mbooni East Sub-County over the weekend, Mulwa called on county governments to put in place measures to respond swiftly to any suspected Ebola cases.

“I urge every county to prepare to deal with this disease because our people are always travelling to other countries like Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo,” he said.

Mulwa urged Kenyans to remain alert and seek medical care immediately if they experienced symptoms associated with Ebola.

He listed symptoms, including sore throat, high fever, extreme fatigue, headache, loss of appetite and vomiting, cautioning the public against ignoring unusual signs of illness.

“If you suddenly get these symptoms, please seek medical attention in hospital immediately,” he said.

The official noted that cross-border movement made preparedness particularly important, requiring coordinated efforts by health authorities and communities to identify and respond to suspected infections promptly.

According to information provided by Dr Mulwa, eight Ebola cases have been detected in the country, including three healthcare workers. One of the affected workers, aged 49, was reportedly suspected of having come into contact with the first person who died from the disease in Kenya.
