The principal St. Patricks Iten high school Peter Rotich has assured parents that the school was ready for the first lot of students under the competency based curriculum (CBC).
The principal said the school has been preparing since last year for the new system saying teachers had been taken for retooling including attending various workshops to enable them handle the new system.
He added that they had also visited various schools in grade 9 in a bid to understand the system and get to know what is expected of them.
Speaking at the school during the admission of the students, the principal said they were expecting a total of 500 grade 10 learners saying by yesterday 300 had reported and were expecting the rest today so that learning can start.
The principal said they expected to start teaching immediately saying contrary to the 8-4-4 system where grades were determined by one exam, assessment in the CBC is continuous.
He added that the school had prepared some textbooks which they will use as they wait for the government to provide books through KICD, saying that the school was offering all the pathways.
“The STEM pathway will get 65% of the learners, Arts and Sports 15% while the social sciences will get 25%. We are also offering other subjects like building and construction, sign language and indigenous languages,” he said.
Parents were hopeful that the new system will be of great benefit to learners as they will start early to choose pathways which they are passionate about as opposed to the 8 4 4 curriculum where they were forced to take all subjects.
They hoped that the government will provide books on time to allow uninterrupted learning and also invest in construction of workshops, laboratories and adequate teachers to handle the students in the various pathways that they have chosen.
