Residents of Wajir County can now file High Court cases locally following the operationalization of the Wajir High Court Sub-Registry.
Speaking in Wajir Tuesday during the launch ceremony, Garissa High Court Judge John Onyiego said the move is in line with the Judiciary’s blueprint for social transformation and the constitutional mandate to enhance access to justice across the country.
Justice Onyiego noted that the Chief Justice’s mandate includes ensuring that every county has a High Court to decentralize judicial services.
“We are here today to operationalize the Wajir High Court Sub-Registry, so that residents can continue enjoying High Court services within their county,” he said.
The High Court Judge added that although an official launch by the Chief Justice will be held at a later date, the court was already operational and has begun receiving and processing cases.
“As of today, we have registered over 20 matters, which we have acted upon. Residents no longer need to travel to Garissa to file High Court cases. They can now file all High Court matters at the Wajir Sub-Registry,” he said.
Justice Onyiego urged residents to utilize the new facility, noting that it will reduce the cost and inconvenience of travelling to Garissa for court services.
He said the establishment of the sub-registry will also cut transport costs for police officers escorting prisoners, reduce expenses incurred by witnesses travelling to testify in Garissa and make it easier for relatives to attend court proceedings.
“The benefits of this court cannot be overstated. It will save on transport costs and enhance access to justice for the people of Wajir,” he said.
