The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is targeting to register 17,051 new voters in Teso North Constituency ahead of the 2027 General Election.
If achieved, the new registrations will increase the number of voters in the constituency from the current 59,795 to 76,846.
The Commission is set to roll out an Enhanced Voter Registration Exercise starting March 29 to reach eligible voters across various wards as preparations for the 2027 polls gather momentum.
Currently, IEBC is conducting Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) at its constituency office in Amagoro District Headquarters, as well as through outreach activities during public forums.
Teso North Senior Elections Officer Moses Ahete expressed concern over the low turnout of eligible voters visiting the constituency office to register.
In addition to voter registration, the commission is facilitating voter transfers, change of voter particulars, and voter verification.
It is also liaising with the Registrar of Births and Deaths to clean up the voters’ register by removing deceased persons.
Ahete was speaking during a public baraza at Malaba Health centre where he also announced plans to roll out voter sensitization campaigns.
He said voter educators will move across the constituency to create awareness on the importance of registration and participation in the electoral process.
Busia County Commissioner Stephen Orinde reiterated the call for residents to register as voters to exercise their constitutional right in the 2027 General Election.
Orinde also urged those who have applied for national identity cards to collect them, noting that many IDs remain uncollected at the Busia Huduma Centre.
He further advised individuals seeking elective positions to work closely with security agencies to enhance their safety and that of voters.
“Every Kenyan has a right to seek any leadership position provided they qualify. We, as security teams, shall support you as long as you follow the laws of the land and those governing elections,” he said.
The CC also urged the youth to resist attempts by politicians to use them for unruly activities, encouraging them instead to take advantage of government empowerment programs to improve their livelihoods.
