The National Police Inspector General, Douglas Kanja, declared the police recruitment exercise smooth and transparent and said it went on without any hitches across all 427 recruitment centres.

Kanja was speaking at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Monday evening after he reviewed the exercise where the recruitment was ongoing and noted the good turnout and smooth process.

“The exercise has been good all over the country and I have not received any complaints. I am looking forward to the exercise being concluded in a timely manner and the right people joining the service,” noted Kanja.

The IG added that the recruitment has come at an appropriate time since none has been done in the last three years, so the 10,000 new recruits will bring in more strength to the police force and especially for the 2027 general elections on community engagement and professionalism.

“This recruitment has come at a critical time and is a reformist group that is joining the service during reforms. We will be together with them in the transformation journey and I am proud of the exercise, which has progressed well all over the country,” said IG Kanja.

Over 250 youths had turned up for the exercise at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos town and only 24 were successful.

In Elgeyo Marakwet, it was tears of joy for Sheila Kiplagat, a 24-year-old girl from the Kiptany minority community in Keiyo North, after she was recruited in the just-concluded National Police Service recruitment exercise.

According to Ms Kiplagat, there is only one minibus which plies the route, which one has to book in advance. “The matatu starts its journey at 4.00am, and one has to book with the driver for instructions on where she/he will be picked up,” she said.

Ms. Kiplagat settled for the popular bodaboda, which she reasoned would be faster but along the way they got a puncture. “I panicked as I envisioned all my dreams to join the disciplined forces literally dying,” she said.

She was, however, lucky, as the bodaboda rider was able to fix the puncture and they managed to reach Iten at 7.30am, giving her time to relax and get ready for the recruitment, which started exactly at 8am.
