Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) Teachers in Kakamega County are demanding autonomy, decrying frustration from the primary school sector, where they are domiciled.
They now want JSS schools to have a principal, deputy principal and be allowed to carry on with their activities such as extra-curricular, without involvement of the heads of primary school section.
Speaking to the media in Kakamega town, the teachers also warned that they will form their own union if the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), was reluctant to represent their concerns.
The Chair of JSS Teachers Kakamega, Kennedy Weaver, noted that they were ready to teach, but not with the current challenges.
He said under the current system, JSS teachers were facing intimidation, victimization and frustrations, warning that if the trend continues, then it will affect delivery of content to learners.
The KUPPET Secretary gender in Kakamega, Joy Musungu Sande said it was time the government addresses concerns raised by JSS teachers.
She noted that she had solved many cases of JSS teachers clashing with those of the primary school section.
“Let us give JSS teachers their right to be where they are supposed to be, give them their own space to operate, let them have their own structures that are deemed fit for them to deliver.
If we continue crowding them in primary schools, then we are not going to achieve what we are supposed to achieve in the new curriculum,” added Sande.
