Traders in Kapkatet town, Bureti subcounty have raised concerns over what they term as poor state of environmental hygiene.
Led by town manager Dennis Koech, the traders, as well as town residents, said there was wastes were disposed haphazardly due to lack of designated dumpsters.
Koech said the town had poor drainage system as well as sewers, a state which has led to retention of rain water by the road side.
He said traders, especially those dealing with groceries, usually abandon rotten fruits and vegetables to rot by the road, leading to pungent smell.
The locals said they risked contracting diseases which would otherwise be prevented through stringent environmental hygiene.
He urged the County Government of Kericho’s department of public health to urgently collect solid waste while the department of urban planning should ensure there was proper drainage system in the town.
The town usually hosts market days on Wednesday and Saturday where traders involved in apparel, groceries and livestock gather to trade.
