Kawaya defends Sh2 trillion Dangote refinery project in Lamu

Mwala MP and UDA National Organising Secretary Vincent Musyoka Kawaya has defended the proposed Sh2 trillion Dangote oil refinery in Lamu, urging leaders to support investments aimed at creating jobs and strengthening Kenya’s economy.

Speaking in Mlolongo during an economic empowerment event, Kawaya said the refinery, projected to create up to 60,000 jobs and process 700,000 barrels of oil per day, would contribute to industrialisation, energy security and economic growth.

“This is a Sh2 trillion-plus investment. It is about jobs, industries, investment, energy security and the transformation of Lamu into a major economic hub. Why would anyone want to frustrate such an opportunity?” Kawaya posed.

He questioned critics who had previously raised concerns over Kenya’s dependence on imported fuel, saying any objections to the project should be addressed through established legal channels rather than efforts to derail the investment.

Kawaya welcomed the Malindi Environment and Land Court’s decision declining to stop the September 30 groundbreaking ceremony, while directing parties to maintain the status quo on disputed portions of land pending further proceedings on October 14.

“The court has not killed this investment. The groundbreaking has proceeded, while issues raised by petitioners will continue to be dealt with through due process,” he said.

The MP said the project was consistent with President William Ruto’s industrialisation agenda and urged leaders to support investments that could create opportunities for young people.

He said large-scale projects were important in expanding employment, attracting industries and strengthening Kenya’s energy security.

Machakos Minority Leader Francis Kavyu echoed the call, urging opposition leaders to support initiatives aimed at advancing the country’s economic transformation.
