A Kibuye market leader accused of brutally assaulting two traders at the market on Monday will remain in custody until November 24, Kisumu Principal Magistrate Robert Oanda has ordered.
Judith Matengo, widely known as Nyaramba was arraigned before the court on Tuesday, where she faced three counts of creating a disturbance in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace, assault causing actual bodily harm, and taking part in unlawful assembly.
She was arrested on Monday night after engaging police officers in a hide and seek game.
State prosecutors strongly opposed her release on bail or bond, arguing that Matengo’s return to the market would inflame an already volatile situation.
They told the court that traders who had recorded statements were living in fear of intimidation or retaliation, noting that the accused is an influential figure within Kibuye Market’s leadership structure.
The court heard that some witnesses had already expressed reluctance to cooperate, citing threats and pressure from Matengo’s allies.
Prosecutors further warned that the accused might use her position as market chairlady to evict or harass traders who had spoken out about the assault.
They also raised concerns for the accused’s personal safety, saying that returning her to the same environment where the attacks occurred could spark fresh confrontations between rival factions within the market.
Principal Magistrate Oanda concurred with the prosecution, ruling that releasing the accused at this stage would compromise public order and endanger witnesses.
He therefore directed that she be remanded until Monday, November 24, when the matter will be mentioned.
The case will proceed to a full hearing in January 2026, with another mention scheduled for December 18, 2025.
Meanwhile, police said investigations are ongoing and that several other suspects linked to the assault are still at large.
