Kindiki defends track record, flags economic gains in Etago visit

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki Thursday led a major government-backed development event in Etago, Kisii County, where he emphasized the Kenya Kwanza administration’s unwavering commitment to uplifting small-scale businesses, enhancing agricultural productivity, and stabilizing Kenya’s economy.

Addressing a large gathering of residents and local leaders, Kindiki described the day as ‘purely developmental, not political’.

Kindiki said the occasion had been designated for development purpose, aligning with Kenya Kwanza’s pre-election pledge to empower ordinary Kenyans economically.

This is not a political rally. It is a day to support our small traders and groups, as we promised. Unlike other leaders who make promises during campaigns and disappear after elections, we are back to fulfill our word,” said Kindiki.

In a show of support for local enterprise, Kindiki launched a fund drive and presented a total of Sh9 million to bolster small-scale traders and organized groups in the region.

The money, he said, was aimed at promoting self-reliance and growing micro-enterprises which form the backbone of Kenya’s grassroots economy.

Every job matters, whether it is roasting maize, tailoring, or running a kiosk. Our work is to lift you where you are and help you grow. That’s the spirit of Kenya Kwanza,” Kindiki remarked to applause.

He urged beneficiaries to utilize the funds prudently and grow sustainable businesses that will create jobs and contribute to local and national economic resilience.

Kindiki took time to highlight the Kenya Kwanza government’s achievements in steering the country back to economic recovery after the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He noted that Kenya had risen from eighth to sixth largest economy in Africa over the past year, attributing the rebound to sound policy decisions.

This is a government that works, not just talking, but doing. We are seeing real results in every county, and Kisii is no exception,” he said.

He highlighted several government achievements, including a stronger shilling against the dollar which has eased import costs, reduced fuel and maize flour prices that have cushioned families, lowered fertilizer costs leading to increased food production, improved farm gate prices for crops such as coffee and milk, and the revival of sugar factories, with sugarcane farmers now receiving bonuses similar to those earned by tea farmers.

Some people want to politicize every government effort. I remind them, campaigns ended. It’s time to work. Elections are in 2027, let’s not distract the people now,” he said.

National Assembly Chief Whip and area MP Silvanus Osoro echoed Kindiki’s sentiments, reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving local infrastructure. He singled out the urgent need for improved roads in Etago and surrounding areas.

Good roads are the bridge between farmers and markets. Once we improve them, our farmers will move their produce easily and fetch better prices,” said Osoro.
