Leaders pledge to enhance measures on drought mitigation

Isiolo leaders have pledged to continue current measures to mitigate the ongoing drought that has ravaged many parts of the county.

Speaking during the Mashujaa Day celebrations, the County Commissioner Mr. Geoffrey Omoding stated that over 150,000 people across the county have been affected but so far many households have received relief food.

Chiefs, assistant chiefs and area managers have been put on notice in the identification of the most affected households and distribution of the relief food. Those found engaging in any way of corruption will face disciplinary action.

“In case someone dies within your jurisdiction, you will be fired as the government has provided food for the most vulnerable households in the region,” he warned.

According to Omoding, over 7000 vulnerable families are getting cash transfers from the government and another 9,000 from non-state actors or development partners.

Isiolo Governor Mr. Abdi Guyo said that his administration will continue working on measures to ease the drought situation and distribute food to vulnerable populations and to schools that have had to close down due to the hunger crisis.

Guyo promised to work with the national government and development partners in order to ensure residents are cushioned from the hunger affecting most parts of the county.

Isiolo woman Representative Mumina Bonaya said that she was pushing the national government to reconsider more ways of interventions for the drought-ravaged populations in Isiolo and for the Ministry of Education to revive the school feeding programme.
