Malindi police announce major breakthrough in containing juvenile offenders

Malindi police have announced a major breakthrough in dismantling gangs of juvenile criminals that have in the recent past terrorised the residents of Malindi town and its environs.

Malindi Sub County Police Commander Moses Kosgei said most members of the groups known locally as ‘mawoza’ had fled the area to escape an onslaught by security agencies, but noted that others were attempting to regroup under new names.

Speaking to journalists in his office on Tuesday, Kosgei said that a multi-agency security operation had successfully decimated the gangs that have been using crude weapons to rob and maim residents.

“We have managed to contain the woza woza groups. However, some members have lately been regrouping and adopting new names,” the police commander said adding that his officers were on high alert to ensure that the groups do not take root again in the area.

He assured members of the public that authorities possess crucial intelligence, including details of their gang leaders.

The Police commander identified the gangs’ core as predominantly school dropouts and beach operators seeking alternative means of livelihood following the collapse of the tourism sector, the mainstay of Malindi town.

“Most of the gang members are 16- to 18-year-old school dropouts and beach boys who have unfortunately ganged up, getting into crime for income.

Kosgei issued a strong appeal for community collaboration, urging society, parents, and the public to actively report individuals involved in criminal activities rather than shielding them.

He emphasized that public cooperation is essential to dismantle the reorganizing networks and prevent the re-emergence of the juvenile criminals.
