Mara Sugar FC, also known as the Sugar Millers, have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Mozzart Bet Cup after a commanding 2-0 win over FKF Division One side Compel FC in a rescheduled Round of 16 encounter played at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu County.
The match, initially postponed due to an appeal filed by AFC Leopards contesting Mara’s qualification in the previous knockout round, proceeded after the appeal was dismissed by the Football Kenya Federation. Mara took full advantage of the opportunity, putting on a dominant performance to secure their place in the last eight.
The win was a morale booster for the Sugar Millers, who are also battling to retain their FKF Premier League status.
Defender Lameck Omondi, who joined the club in the mid-season transfer window from National Super League side Darajani Gogo, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to make a deep run in the tournament.
“While our main aim is to retain our FKFPL status, we are also determined to go as far as possible in the Mozzart Bet Cup and win it. On that, we are fully focused and prepared to get a win,” said Omondi.
Since joining the team, Omondi has worked his way into the starting lineup, overcoming a slow start to become a key player in Mara’s backline. His defensive stability played a crucial role in the clean sheet against Compel FC.
With the quarterfinals now in sight, Mara Sugar FC will be hoping to maintain their momentum and continue their dream run in the Mozzart Bet Cup.
Fans and stakeholders will be eagerly watching to see whether the team can bring home the coveted trophy to cap off what has been a challenging but promising season.
The club, founded in 2012 by a group of Transmara Sugar Company employees in Enoosaen, Narok County, has grown from humble beginnings.
The founding members, united by a passion for football, created the team as a way to stay active and connected after working hours. Over the years, Mara Sugar FC has developed into a competitive side in Kenyan football.
