Igembe South residents have been cautioned against consumption of uninspected meat, especially during this festive season.
They have been urged to only go for certified meat that were safe for human consumption as the festive season begins.
Sub county livestock officer Ben Inanga warned that many unlicensed traders have been selling uninspected meat putting consumers at risk of contracting deadly diseases.
Inanga said cases of uninspected meat entering the market tend to rise during the festive period when demand is high and unscrupulous sellers try to take advantage of unsuspecting buyers.
“Many people tend to slaughter animals and sell meat without going through the required inspection process due to high demand. This is very dangerous and can lead to serious health issues,” he said.
The officer noted that some diseases such as anthrax, tuberculosis and tapeworm infections can be transmitted from animals to humans and thus residents should not consume uninspected meat at all costs.
He added that proper inspection ensures that only healthy animals enter the food chain thereby boosting public confidence in local butcheries.
Inanga advised residents to look out for the official inspection stamp on all meat products and to buy only from authorized butcheries and slaughter points.
He added that they will intensify surveillance to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and issued a stern warning to those engaging in the illegal sale of uninspected meat.
‘’Anyone found selling uninspected meat will face the full force of the law. We will not allow a few individuals to endanger public health,’’ he cautioned.
Residents were further encouraged to report any suspicious meat selling activities to the nearest veterinary or public health office.
