Media practitioners assured of safety

Media practitioners in Mt Elgon Sub County, Bungoma County have been assured of their safety and security ahead of 2022 electioneering period.

Reacting to an incident in which a communications officer was hacked to death and which was linked to 2022 elections politics, Mt Elgon Deputy County Commissioner Mr. David Kosgey lauded the key role that media plays in the society citing peace building in the sub county and committed to ensure their safety as they discharged their duty.

“This region has been affected by violence in the past but as you can experience now there has been peace and media has been among the key stakeholders to bring and maintain peace in the region,” he told the press at his office in Kapsokwony.

The DCC said that election has been one of issues that brought about instability in the region and promised that the security team will ensure stability before, during and after election.

However, he challenged the media fraternity to adhere to professionalism while practicing, more so ahead of 2022 election reminding them to counter check facts to ensure that it’s reported correctly and accurately.

Kosgey also called upon politician and the public to prioritize peace in the sub county and its environment and shun tribal politics as they concentrate on issue-based politics. He also called upon the public to accommodate divergent opinions during campaign.

The DCC said that he will form a social media group on whatsapp that will be used to share, verify and clarify information more so matters touching on security.

The communication officer in question was from Kanduyi National Government Community Fund.
