The third edition of the Kenya Public-Private Sector MSMEs Connect dialogue took off yesterday bringing together entrepreneurs, government officials, and private sector players in Mombasa to explore opportunities for small businesses and promote economic transformation.
The dialogue provides a rare platform for entrepreneurs to interact with policymakers and investors, with overarching goal of empowering MSMEs, improving access to financing, and creating sustainable jobs across the country.
Speaking during the event, Abdallah Sudi Suleiman, an official from the Micro-Small Enterprise Authority (MSEA) in Kwale County, highlighted the Authority’s role in strengthening small businesses through capacity building, market linkages, and formalization.
He noted that the Authority has rolled out key projects, including the Kenya Job Economic Transformation (KJET) and National Youth Opportunity Towards Advancement (NYOTA).
“NYOTA provides young entrepreneurs with grants of up to Sh550,000 to help them start small businesses, while KJET supports enterprises in the technology sector with modern machines to improve value chains,” Suleiman explained.
He added that nine priority value chains, including blue economy, leather, and textiles, are receiving focused investment. To support this, the Authority has set up Constituency Enterprise Development Centres across counties, equipped with common user machines to help manufacturers access modern tools without the high cost of ownership.
Showcasing the creativity of local enterprises, Ian Onyango from Akamba Handicraft in Changamwe presented finely crafted wood carvings, home décor, and kitchen wares.
“Our products, from animal carvings to key holders and wooden bowls, are handmade by men and painted by women, creating both jobs and unique cultural items,” he said.
Similarly, Esther Wanzila, representing the Craft Masai Market at City Mall, Nyali, emphasised the importance of such platforms in boosting visibility for artisans.
“We sell products such as shangaa jewellery, beach clothes, and deras. Events like MSME Connect give us a chance to showcase our work and reach wider markets,” she said.
