Ann Ngatha Macharia was sworn in as the new Clerk of the Murang’a County Assembly on Tuesday, bringing more than two decades of public service experience to the leadership of the county legislature.
Assembly Speaker Johnson Mukuha congratulated Ngatha on her appointment, describing the milestone as the beginning of a new chapter of service and leadership in the institution.
Mukuha said he was pleased that the recruitment process had been successfully concluded following a thorough and competitive interview process to identify a suitable candidate for the position.
He wished the new clerk success in her new role, expressing confidence that her tenure would be marked by excellence, integrity and meaningful progress in strengthening the institution.
“May your tenure be marked by excellence, integrity, and meaningful progress in strengthening the institution,” said Mukuha in his congratulatory message.
Ngatha brings extensive experience in public administration, legislative operations and county assembly management, having progressively risen through various positions since beginning her career at the defunct Town Council of Maragua.
Her career started with secretarial and administrative responsibilities before she moved into Hansard and human resource functions, eventually taking up increasingly senior positions within the Murang’a County Assembly.
She has served as acting clerk of the county assembly and secretary to the County Assembly Service Board on two occasions, first between 2019 and 2020 and again from 2025.
The assignments gave her practical experience in legislative and committee services, chamber operations, parliamentary procedures, institutional administration and governance.
Ngatha is an experienced public administrator and a certified public secretary, with qualifications and professional experience expected to ground her in overseeing the assembly’s administrative operations and facilitating its legislative functions.
Her appointment follows the resignation of Wilson Kuria Thuita, who previously served as the clerk of the county assembly. The County Assembly Service Board accepted his resignation with effect from September 8, 2026.
Following the resignation, the board declared the position vacant and initiated a competitive recruitment process to identify a suitable candidate to head the assembly’s administration.
The clerk of the county assembly plays a central role in supporting the legislative institution, including coordinating its administrative functions, facilitating proceedings and committee operations, and ensuring the effective implementation of parliamentary procedures.
Ngatha’s appointment is expected to provide continuity in the assembly’s operations as it continues to discharge its legislative, oversight and representation mandates.
Her experience within the institution, including her previous stints as acting clerk, gives her familiarity with the assembly’s procedures, administrative structures and governance responsibilities.
As she assumes the substantive position, the speaker’s message underscores the importance of integrity, professionalism and effective leadership in strengthening the county assembly as a key institution of devolved governance.
