Construction of the Sh76.2 million Mwala Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) Market in Machakos County has reached 60 per cent completion, with the modern facility expected to be ready by late September 2026.
The market, designed to accommodate about 1,600 traders, was inspected by the Machakos County Development Technical Committee (CDTC), led by Mwala Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner David Tegutwa, who represented the County Commissioner.
The inspection sought to assess the progress of the project and address challenges that could affect timely completion.
The project commenced on January 17, 2026, and is being supervised by Sub-County Clerk of Works Evans Mutuvi, who said financing remained the main challenge but construction was progressing steadily.
“The project is currently 60 per cent complete. The main challenge we are facing is financing, but there are no issues with the community. We are working towards completing the project by late September,” Mutuvi said.
He said between 10 and 30 workers were engaged at the site depending on the stage of construction, adding that works had continued despite financial constraints.
Once completed, the market will provide traders with modern and organised trading spaces equipped with smart market facilities to improve the business environment.
The facilities will include cold rooms, a management office, an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) hub, and a social hall.
Mutuvi said the modern infrastructure would improve trading conditions for both traders and customers while supporting local economic activities.
DCC Tegutwa said the technical committee would continue monitoring the project to ensure the remaining works were completed within the set timeframe.
He said the Government was keen on ensuring development projects were completed on schedule to deliver the intended benefits to residents.
The facility is expected to boost local trade in Mwala by providing improved infrastructure and a more conducive environment for businesses.
